It’s easy to get discouraged by past mistakes and feel like we should be perfect already — but God doesn’t see us that way. Encourage your child with this story about Jeremiah and remind them we’re all works in progress.

Step 1

Step 1

Set the Scene

Say: It’s easy to feel like we must be perfect, but that’s not how God sees us at all. In fact, He knows we’re all a work in progress. Here’s what He said to Jeremiah, one of the prophets, about this.

Step 2

Step 1

Tell the Story

Jeremiah was a prophet.

(Cup your hands around your mouth.)

He taught others about God and shared messages from Him.

(Point a finger up.)

“Go to the pottery shop,” God told him. “There, I will tell you what to say to everyone.”

(Walk in place.)

When Jeremiah got there, he saw someone making clay pots.

(Place your hand over your brow.)

But when something went wrong, the potter turned the clay into something else.

(Crumple your hands together. Then, stack your fists together.)

Then, God spoke to Jeremiah. “I am all-powerful,” God said.

(Point a finger up.)

“I am like the potter with the clay.”

(Stack your fists together.)

We are like clay jars. God shapes us.

(Stack your fists together.)

We do not shape ourselves. We hurt. But we are never destroyed.

(Crumple your hands together.)

When we do not know what to do, we do not give up. When we are in trouble, God is with us.

(Link your index fingers together.)

When we fall, we get back up.

(Crouch. Then, jump up.)

Step 3

Step 1

Praise

Say: As long as we’re on this side of heaven, none of us are finished yet. We are all a work in progress — just like the clay in the potter’s hands.

We’ve all still got lots of growing to do, and God isn’t finished with any of us yet.

He’s still busy writing your story — a story of hope, love, and purpose. What an exciting future to look forward to@

Lead your child in a moment of praise. Celebrate and thank God for His faithfulness and everlasting love.

Share the hope of God’s Word and pray together with your child.

Scripture Verse

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promise to work everything for good in our lives — even the hard and painful parts. Help us to have patience and trust in You as you continue to write the story of our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
