Overiew
For some children, it can be a struggle to feel like they matter to God. Maybe they feel too small, too young or like they have nothing useful to offer. Encourage your children to love and serve Jesus with this inspiring story about a boy, five loaves of bread and two fish.

Set the Scene
Say: Did you know there are lots of kids mentioned in the Bible? Today, we’re going to learn about one from the Book of Mark.

Tell the Story
One day when Jesus was teaching. Late in the afternoon, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go get something to eat.”
(Point away from yourself.)
But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary — you feed them.”
The disciples said, “There’s a young boy here with five loaves of bread and two fish. But what good is that? There are so many people.”
(Hold up seven fingers. Then, shrug your shoulders.)
Jesus said, “Bring them here.” (Motion toward you.) Then, He told the people to sit down on the grass.
Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them.
(Clasp hands together as if in prayer.)
Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, He gave the bread to the disciples, who distributed it to the people.
(With fists side-by-side, quickly break them apart.)
They all ate as much as they wanted.
(Pretend to eat.)
About 5,000 men were fed that day, in addition to all the women and children!

Praise & Prayer
Say: Isn’t it cool that a child shared their food with Jesus? Not an adult or one of the disciples — but a kid! And I’m sure he had no idea God would use him in such a mighty way. But that’s true for you, too. We have no idea how big and wonderful God’s plans for your life are!
Lead your child in a moment of praise. During this time, encourage your child to praise God for being Jehovah Jireh — the Lord will provide.
Share the hope of God’s Word and pray together with your child.

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for loving and creating each of us with purpose and value. Help us to offer You all that we have each day — just like the boy in the story – and use us to bless others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
