For children who have experienced trauma, losing or misplacing an item can feel catastrophic. Use this activity to partner with your child and help them find the missing item — while also learning about Jesus in the process.
Step 1
Step 1
Assure Your Child
If your child has come to you and said they lost something or if you hear them getting frustrated because they can’t find their belongings, assure them that you’re there to help.
Say: You’re not alone. I’ll help you search for _____.
Step 2
Step 2
Start the Game
Say: Let’s turn this into a game. Here’s our joint mission: Let’s see who can find _____ the fastest. Go!
Spend time with your child searching for the item. Show your excitement when you find the item, and if it remains lost, reassure your child.
Step 3
Step 3
Praise & Prayer
Say: Did you know we have a special hiding place, too? Jesus is our safe place, and we can always share our thoughts, worries and fears with Him. We can talk to Him anywhere, anytime about anything.
Remind your child that if they or someone they know is being hurt, they need to share that information with you, too. Explain that being a safe place means you don’t allow that hurt to continue.
Share the hope of God’s Word and pray together with your child.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us something we can never lose — Your great love! Help us to remember that You offer us peace that is stronger than any emotion or feeling we struggle with. In Jesus’ name, amen.
