Overiew
If you have multiple children, sibling rivalry is bound to appear. In these moments of disagreement and discord, use this game to teach your kids empathy and how to see a situation from someone else’s perspective.
Step 1
Step 1
Swap Shoes
The next time your kids are arguing, tell them to stop what they’re doing and stand as still as a statue. Then, tell them to take off their shoes and swap them with the other person. If your child is resistant, have both kids take off their shoes and trade places with one another so they’re standing behind the other person’s shoes.
Say: Now that you’re standing in someone else’s shoes, let’s talk about why we’re so upset. Each of you will have the opportunity to explain how you feel, but make sure you’re listening to what the other person says when they speak. That’s the only way you’ll understand their perspective.
Step 2
Step 2
Reach a Compromise
Once each child has shared their perspective and been heard, encourage them to reach a compromise.
Say: Now, we’re going to find a compromise. In compromises, both people agree to give a little, and nobody gets everything they want. That’s okay, though, because we’re not the only people in this world, and we need to come to a solution that’s good for both of you.
When your kids reach a compromise, they might not be happy about it. Tell them that’s okay — it’s perfectly fine to not be happy about everything all the time.
Step 3
Step 3
Praise & Prayer
Have your kids switch back into their shoes.
Say: Sometimes, life doesn’t seem fair — but we serve a God who is always fair! He loved us enough to send His Son, Jesus, even though we didn’t deserve it. He loves us without compromise.
Share the hope of God’s Word and pray together with your child.
Scripture Verse
“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, we live in a broken world that can be unfair. Thank You for Your perfect love and promise to always be with us. Help us to remember that nothing is bigger or stronger than Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
