If you get the feeling something is bothering your child, bedtime can be when they’re most open to sharing their emotions with you. Invite your child to identify what’s bothering them and where it hurts so you can provide comfort and reassurance.
Step 1
Step 1
Find the Hurt
Say: I noticed you seemed upset today and thought you might be hurting somewhere. Could I put a Band-Aid on you? (If your child says yes, ask them where they want you to place the Band-Aid. If they say no, explain inside hurts.)
You know, we can still place a Band-Aid somewhere — even if your insides hurt. For example, if my friend said something hurtful to me today, I might want to place a Band-Aid over my heart. Or, if I’m worried about something, I might place the Band-Aid on my forehead. (Ask again if your child wants you to place a Band-Aid anywhere.)
Step 2
Step 2
Understand the Hurt
Say: Would you like to tell me about your hurt?
Listen attentively while your child explains what hurt them and why. If your child does not want to explain, let them know you are always here for them and will do whatever you can to help them navigate their emotions.

Praise & Prayer
Prayer
Lord, thank You that You care about us and have promised to be with us. Nothing — even things that hurt and upset us — can separate us from Your love. Please comfort us this evening and protect us while we sleep. In Jesus’ name, amen.
