When your child feels unsafe in the dark, bedtime can be a real challenge. Help them associate nighttime with this fun game instead by playing it right before it’s time to unwind for the evening.

Step 1

Step 1

Set Up the Game

Tell your child you will be playing a game of flashlight tag for five minutes before starting their normal bedtime routine. Set a timer if necessary. Give them one of the flashlights and keep the other for yourself.

Say: Now, I’m going to turn off the light. Once the light’s off, turn on your flashlight and aim it at the wall. Then, I’ll turn on mine. (Turn off the light.) Now, let’s decide who will be “it” this round. Do you want to be “it” first? (If your child wants to be “it,” tell them to use their light to chase yours around the room.)

Step 2

Step 2

Play the Game

Once one light “catches” the other light, the other person gets to be “it” next. As time allows, play a few rounds of the game. If you do not have room on the wall, you can use the ceiling instead.

Step 3

Step 3

Praise & Prayer

When the timer goes off, invite your child to shine their flashlight on something in their room that makes them happy or something they are thankful for.

Say: I thank God for you, too! When you’re praying tonight, make sure you thank God for your (item your child named) and all the other things you’re grateful for.

Share the hope of God’s Word and pray together with your child.

Scripture Verse

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'”

Prayer

Lord, You are the light of the world. Even in the darkness, You are always with us. You give us hope, peace and joy! Please remind us of Your presence — even as we sleep. In Jesus’ name, amen.
