After a long day at school, the last thing kids want to do is more assignments. Help your child learn to manage their emotions and complete their homework by having fun while giving them choices about where they can complete their assignments.
Step 1
Step 1
Talk to Your Child
When your child is calm and not thinking about homework (early in the evening or on the weekend), approach them to discuss your plan for tackling homework time together.
Say: I noticed this past week you’ve been getting frustrated with your homework. I know homework isn’t always fun, but I have an idea for how we can make it feel a little better next time. Before you start your assignments, I want you to choose where you want to work. It can be anywhere in the house! You get to decide.
Step 2
Step 2
Homework Time
Remind your child before they start their homework to choose where they want to work. If they struggle with choosing their own study spot, offer them some choices:
Once your child has made their choice, check in on them every 20–30 minutes, depending on their age, to make sure they are working safely.
Step 3
Step 3
Praise & Prayer
Once your child’s homework is completed, praise them and remind them their effort and attitude was pleasing to God.
Say: I’m so proud of you and how you didn’t give up today — and you should be, too! But do you know who else is proud? God. He wants us to work hard in everything we do, including our homework!
Share the hope of God’s Word and pray together with your child.

Scripture Verse
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for always being in control even when our hearts and lives feel completely overwhelming. Help us to think about You and rest in Your love when everything else feels like it’s falling apart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
